Translation software for e-Watchman

//Translation software for e-Watchman

Hello everyone

I am doing an experiment with machine translation of this site. I know google translate is not the best, especially when it comes to translating uncommon words peculiar to the Bible and Jehovah’s Witnesses. But I thought I try this service out that uses Google and Bing to translate an entire site. I have chosen a dozen languages, although there are many, many more. There is a drop down menu at the top of the righthand sidebar. Click on the language you wish.

I would like to ask those who are fluent in any of the languages to check it out and let me know if it is close or totally unacceptable. The promising feature is, that the translated versions are hosted on a cloud and editable. So, if the versions are close those of you who are working on translations of either this site or the book may want to avail yourselves of the translated version for edit. If the service is acceptable I’ll subscribe to the service for the book site and the Daily Commentary too.

Please leave your comments here or via email.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, I just noticed that it even translates the Tweets and sidebar comments. That’s pretty cool

This would be great if it would work perfectly. Unfortunately most of the time from our laptop both on chrome and firefox it only says “server not found”. Some verses on your slideshow has been cut (cause our language usually uses more words than in English) while around 40-50% are incorrect because the words are translated literally. For example, instead of “The day of Jehovah” it was translated into “The birthday of God.” Some sentences are understandable though but most are confusing because of missing words and wrong translation. Also usually when translating English into our language, the sequence is the other way around but here it was translated in the exact same order so its a bit confusing. But well at least 50% is acceptable.

Apparently their server is down or something, because I can’t pull up anything either, but it was working. I’ll check my backend settings too and see if there is something i am missing.

Languages are all structured different, so while one language may not easily translate by machine, others might. Thanks for your feedback

It worked eventually after several tries. It was not so bad. You could say for the most part, it was understandable. Not so bad for a machine.

There are some kinks in the DNS server stuff that have to be worked out to get it to connect to the translation cloud. Just chatting with tech support

I removed the translation options from the front page and this post. It appears that the sidebar option is the only one that will render the whole site. Also, depending on the browser you are using there might be an issue with the pop-up blocker not allowing the translation

    • While trying, I have that message:
“Google Analytics is not installed, please turn off Analytics feature in GTranslate.”
Then it open a new page and after a while, I have an error message.
      “An error occurred.

Sorry, the page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
      Please try again later.

If you see this error constantly and you are the system administrator of this resource then please make sure that you are not blocking our IP address: ##########

Faithfully yours, GTranslate – Translation Proxy.”

  • this is exactly what I was thinking about trying to do with many of your articles Robert I wanted to translate and repost but was not sure how to accomplish that and so I think being able to pull down the bar and translate is a wonderful and very Convenient feature. I hope this works out well.

Better translation than Google. Quite close to the portuguese that we speak in Brazil, just a few mistakes but nothing relevant. Aprooved. Thank you.

Hi, I have to agree that the translation is better than Google. I speak English and Spanish. Presently, I am working on my Portuguese. The Spanish translation is not perfect, but like JA Tam said, it is close to, in this case, Spanish. I love that you are doing this. My mother speaks only Spanish and I have been trying to tell her about what I’ve been learning here. If she is able to get your entire site in Spanish, she can then do research on her own. I think it will be a very useful service. Thanks!

    • ewatchman

Actually, I think it is Google and Bing based. Some are emailing me saying the translations are not very good. It may depend upon the language. I don’t know. Thanks for your work too. I really appreciate it.

      • Rose Castro

Yeah, that is absolutely true. For example, I am finishing a BA degree at the university. This semester, I am having to study Portuguese. When I use Google to help me along, I noticed that the translation from Spanish to Portuguese is more exact (most of the time). However, the translation into English is pretty bad. So, yeah it depends on the language. The translation of your site into Spanish was clear enough. People will get the main points, but it is not perfect. I hope you can do this for people that do not speak English. I think it is important. Thanks!

      • hi Robert I was playing around with the new translation bar and I’m not sure if its my pc or the page but when I try any other then English the page just turns white and stays that way but when I turn the bar back to English it works rite away. do you think this might be a glitch or might it just be my laptop or the kind of browser I’m using?

I wish Brother Robert King to add at least one Indian language most probably either Kannada Tamil or Malayalam. Because majority are from Kannada,Tamil and Malayalam.

I checked a couple of Dutch translations and this is difficult to understand. I can understand since I’m familiar with the background, but I think without background it is not easy to read.
