An Open Letter to Phillip Brumley

                                                                                                             January 7, 2015

Dear Phillip Brumley,

This open letter is in response to your interview aired on JW Broadcast in the month of January, 2015.

First, I appreciate your candor in revealing your private struggle to correct certain personality flaws. All Christians can certainly relate, or at least they should.

But even as you recognize that the quality of humility is of great value in the eyes of God and you have related how you have made an earnest effort to develop it in yourself, you must also surely be aware of the fact that pride or humility may characterize an organization too.

Jehovah certainly acknowledges this principle. For example, at Amos 6:8 God stated: “I am detesting the pride of Jacob…”

So, while each of us must individually stand before the judgment throne of God, so must the organization, of which you are general counsel.

Surely you are aware of the fact that elders and teachers within the congregation of God will receive a heavier judgment. So will those who have been appointed to provide food at the proper time. That is why Jesus said of them: “Then that slave who understood the will of his master but did not get ready or do what he asked will be beaten with many strokes. But the one who did not understand and yet did things deserving of strokes will be beaten with few. Indeed, everyone to whom much was given, much will be demanded of him, and the one who was put in charge of much will have more than usual demanded of him.”

Ultimately, the slave in Christ’s illustration bears the heaviest responsibility. But as “one who is put in charge of much” by virtue of your assignment, you too have a weighty responsibility before God.

While it is a noble thing to fight for the rights of Jehovah’s Witnesses, what about the rights of the children of Jehovah’s Witnesses to be secure in their congregations?

What about the thousands of children who have been sexually abused by predators? What about their rights? Are they due any compensation? If so, why must they appeal to a worldly court of law for justice? And if not, why not? Are abused children really the enemy?

As you know, the very foundation of true religion is the obligation of men in authority to defend the rights of the disadvantaged – the proverbial orphans and widows. How much more so is it your responsibility to set matters right when the organization you represent is also the accused oppressor of those skinned ones whom Christ deems precious?

In your interview you gave testimony that human competence is not the prime thing, that Jehovah has been behind the many victories that your legal team has won. And there is no reason to doubt that is true.

However, if Jehovah is credited with the victory, who takes responsibility for the recent stunning losses the Watchtower has suffered? In fact, as you are no doubt well aware, the Watchtower has the ignominious distinction of having rendered against it the largest judgment in cases of this kind.

Following the logic you yourself espouse, if Jehovah is responsible for the victories the Society has won over the years and decades, then he is also responsible for the recent losses incurred. It is not due to any incompetence on your part. And that being the case, it means that Jehovah has become your enemy and he has left off fighting your legal battles. This should not be considered something extraordinary since God also frequently fought Israel’s battles when they were faithful, but he gave them to their enemies when they were unfaithful.

Make no mistake, the developing pattern indicates that God has abandoned the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Or are you assuming that Heaven’s court will be swayed by your appeal?

How much better it would be to stop being the legal adversary of the downtrodden and abused, even if it means shutting down the printing presses and closing up shop. Perhaps, at least, you could win back Jehovah’s favor by showing some institutional humility and extricate yourself from Satan’s snare.

As it stands now, though, you have obligated Jehovah to wreck the entire inhabited earth just because of your injustice. And the gathering global storm is a sure indication that the day of reckoning is near!

“Now do not scoff, so that your bonds may not be further tightened, for I have heard from the Sovereign Lord, Jehovah of armies, that an extermination has been determined for all the land.”

Isaiah 28:22

(Note to the reader: Over the years I have mailed a few letters directly to Phillip Brumley and the Watchtower’s Legal Department. They routinely return my letters to the sender unopened. That is the reason for an open letter.)
